Among the many topics of interest to people who aren't Muslims the status of Islamic women and the subject of their rights or lack of them. The media’s portrayal of Muslim women usually highlighting their “oppression” seems to contribute to this negative opinion.
The most important factor for this is that people seem to not be able to tell the difference between a culture and a religion - 2 things that are very different. In fact, Islam prohibits oppression of any type to any human being.
The Quran is the sacred book that people of the Islamic Religion live by. This book was written over 13 centuries ago by a man named Muhammad who was considered the messenger of God. 1400 years have gone by and the book has not been altered since.
In the 33rd chapter of the Quran called Soorah Al-Ahzaab verse 59 Allaah The Almighty Says "O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the woman of the believers to bring down over themselves of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allaah Forgiving and Merciful.'' [Quran 33:59] In this verse the Quran states that in Islam wearing a Hijaab is very necessary. Hijaab is a word used to mean covering not only the headscarves.
Oftentimes, when people see a Muslim women who is covered and they assume that they are oppressed. This is incorrect. A Muslim female is not oppressed actually she is liberated because she is no longer valued for material things such as good looks or her body shape. She wants others to judge her on her intelligence, kindness, honesty and personality. Therefore, people will judge her on who she actually is.
When a Muslim woman covers her hair and wears loose clothing, they would be considered as obeying the lords orders to be modest, and not cultural. In fact, Christian nuns are supposed to cover their hair as a sign of modesty, and yet nobody considers them to be “oppressed”. By obeying the orders of The Lord Allah, Muslim women are doing the exact same thing.
Islam is supposedlyto a religion that greatly holds women in very high regard. Long ago when babieswere born and they were male they brought great joy to their family and the birth of a female was considerably filled with less joy and enthusiasm. Sometimes, female were hated so much to a point that they were to be buried alive. Islam has always been against irrational discrimination against female and female infanticide.
''The Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam, said: "Seeking knowledge is mandatory for every Muslim (male and female)." Men and women both have the capacity for learning and understanding. Since it is also their obligation to promote good behavior and condemn bad behavior in all spheres of life, Muslim women must acquire the appropriate education to perform this duty in accordance with their own natural talents and interests.''
The 2 roles women play in their lifetime are of a mother and a wife. Muhammad once said to a group of his freinds: "The best among you are those who are the best to their wives." This states that the Muslims greatly encourage treating women with respect. They must be shown love, respect and care.
''Concerning motherhood, the Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam, said: "Heaven lies under the feet of mothers." This implies that the success of a society can be traced to the mothers who raised it. The first and greatest influence on a person comes from the sense of security, affection and training received from the mother. Therefore, a woman who has children must be educated in order to be a skilled parent.''
Islam is a religion that treats women fairly. Islamic women were given a role 1400 years ago that most women today do not enjoy in the West. These rights are from God and are designed to keep a constant balance in society to what may seem “unfair” or “missing” in one place is made up for or explained in another place.
